Book Reviews Editor Task Description

Mission Studies Journal of the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS), Published with BRILL

This position will advance Mission Studies´ scholarly, international, and collaborative objectives in line with the objectives of the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS) as a member of the journal’s Editorial Team.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A PhD in Mission Studies, Missiology, Intercultural Theology and/or a discipline closely related to these.
  • English language competence:  writing, reading and speaking.
  • Good communication skills.

DUTIES

  • Keep abreast of a broad range of books being published in mission studies and intercultural theology and related disciplines through receiving books directly from publishers as well as catalogues and e-mail announcements. (Note the journal’s readership between academicians and practitioners when selecting the range of books for review).
  • Coordinate and closely collaborate with the Regional Book Reviews Assistants according to the workflow (Regional Book Reviews Assistants identify books -also in other languages than English- to be reviewed- they write a short motivation why they think that these books are relevant- the Book Reviews Editor collects these proposals- if necessary the Editorial Team together sets up a list of priority for books to be reviewed. 
  • Maintain and further develop a network of reviewers, updating the reviewers’ spreadsheet of contact details as appropriate.
  •  Keep in touch with relevant mission studies networks worldwide. 
  • Commission around 30 reviews per year, planning for an average of 10 per issue  and allowing for some potentially not delivering. This involves requesting or posting copies of books and supplying review guidelines to reviewers. See the guidelines for writing a book review on the website of the journal.
  •  Collaborate with the Guest Editors of the thematic issues so that the book reviews published within a thematic issue will be on the theme-in-focus of the thematic issue. 
  • Chase non-submissions as necessary.
  • Edit reviews as they come in and prepare final copy in time for issue deadline.
  •  Be accountable to the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Team.
  • Contribute to the annual report on the journal to be presented to the IAMS Executive Committee.

PERIOD OF SERVICE

The period of service of The Book Reviews editor is coupled with the period of the serving of the Editor in Chief of the journal. This is usually four years. The period of the present vacancy is between January 2026- December 2028.

Please note that the position is to be fulfilled as “academic service” with an honorary fee of £150 per year.
