Second Generation Missions Neil Darragh First generation missions are understood here as those missionary activities in a new place or culture where the Christian message is articulated in the language of the missionaries' place of origin. Second generation missions are missionary activities undertaken by missionaries who have achieved an articulation of the Christian message in a language common to both the missionaries and those to who their message is directed. These are most commonly intra-cultural missions. Such missions have become possible in Aotearoa New Zealand in the last quarter of the 20th century. This paper looks at some recent literature that aids this contemporary shift from cross-cultural to intra-cultural mission. |
