One of the key issues is defining what terms mean. A few points:
 | There are a lot of definitions out there - they do not all agree |
 | Usage is at least as important for determining meaning as derivation |
 | If, as in a research paper, you are concerned about how your key terms are
understood, you need to state your understanding of those terms |
 | That understanding should take note of both usage and derivation |
 | Make use of dictionaries encyclopedias and journals in the field
and what you can find on the Worldwide Web |
