One of the key issues is defining what terms mean. A few points:

bulletThere are a lot of definitions out there - they do not all agree
bulletUsage is at least as important for determining meaning as derivation
bulletIf, as in a research paper, you are concerned about how your key terms are understood, you need to state your understanding of those terms
bulletThat understanding should take note of both usage and derivation
bulletMake use of dictionaries encyclopedias and journals in the field
and what you can find on the Worldwide Web
