Call for Papers: IAMS Pentecostal/Charismatic Expressions in Global Christianity Study Group

The Pentecostal/Charismatic Expressions in Global Christianity Study Group is seeking papers for breakout sessions at the 16th Assembly of The International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS). The conference will be hosted by IAMS Africa and held at the University of South Africa in Pretoria, South Africa, from July 17 to 21, 2026.

The IAMS study group Pentecostal/Charismatic Expressions in Global Christianity is concerned with a wide variety of subjects that, in different ways, relate to the current charismatization of Global Christianity. This global trend has been ongoing for some time, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, making charismatic forms of spirituality and theology prevalent across denominations and regions.  Research on this global phenomenon (often simply referred to as ‘Pentecostalism’) is booming as well. In this area, the IAMS study group seeks to be a relevant missiological forum for discussing the phenomenon and contributing theological perspectives.

The conference theme for the 16th Assembly of IAMS is Walking Together in Mission: Facing Global Challenges for a Sustainable World, which invites papers presenting innovative perspectives on how the global and multifaceted challenges of our time can be addressed in sustainable, collaborative, theological and holistic ways as part of Christian missionary responses that transcend regional and ecclesial divides. The conference is open to a wide range of contributions that explore critical issues through the lens of mission, drawing on both theological frameworks and interdisciplinary perspectives.

As a study group, we invite papers that explore the global challenges from the perspective of Pentecostal/Charismatic expressions in Global Christianity (‘Pentecostalism’ – widely understood), either theologically or empirically. For example, in the areas of:

  • Pentecostalism & ecumenical collaboration
  • Pentecostalism & interfaith relations
  • Pentecostalism & gender equality
  • Pentecostalism & sustainable development
  • Pentecostalism & socio-political engagement
  • Pentecostalism & peace initiatives
  • Pentecostal theology of reconciliation
  • Pentecostal ecotheology
  • Pentecostal public theology
  • Pentecostal child theology
  • Pentecostal feminist theology
  • Pentecostal ecumenical theology

Paper proposals of no more than 250 words are due by November 30, 2025. Applicants will be notified of the acceptance of their papers in January 2026. Draft papers of 2,000 words are due May 31, 2026.
