INVITATION

to the XIth Quadrennial International Conference

of the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS)
July 31 – August 7, 2004 in Port Dickson, Malaysia

On behalf of the IAMS Executive Committee we invite all members of IAMS and other scholars engaged in the academic study of mission to take part in the next IAMS Conference from July 31 – August 7, 2004 at Regency Hotel, Port Dickson, Malaysia.

The theme for the conference is “ Integrity of Mission in the Light of the Gospel: Bearing the Witness of the Spirit “ Read more on the significance of this theme as we have entered the 21st century and seek to understand the role of church and mission in an increasingly complex world.

This will be the first IAMS conference in Southeast Asia. Malaysia is not just a place to meet. But contemplating the integrity of mission in a globalized pluralistic setting, where Christian and other minority faiths are living side by side with a Muslim majority provides a challenging framework for missiological reflection. From the program  outline you will see that the the conference will begin with two days of local exposure as a backdrop for dealing with the theme throughout the conference.

We deeply appreciate the assistance of an able local committee consisting of Malaysian missiologists headed by Dr. Philip Siew of Seminari Theoloji Malaysia in Seremban. This committee will help with exposure trips, programme contents and the hundreds of practical issues involved in such an assembly.

Further details re programme, conference venue, prices, subsidies, registration, etc. can be found on this web site. E-mail bulletins will serve as primary means of communication for those registering for the conference. Papers submitted for the conference will be tabled on the web. The first one is already available.

We hope that the Malaysia assembly will become a fascinating event, where we will focus on the complexities of the study of mission in a globalized multi-cultural and multi-religious world. And we hope that all IAMS members will do their utmost to participate in this important event. For planning purposes it will be helpful if you register even today if you know that you will be coming.

Yours sincerely,
